Black tourmaline, also known as scoryl, is the most common variety of the mineral tourmaline, which belongs to the complex borosilicate minerals. It occurs mainly in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is characterized by a deep black color, longitudinally grooved crystals and a glassy to matte luster.

Tourmaline is also interesting for its piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties - it can create an electric charge when pressure or temperature changes. In esoteric traditions, black tourmaline is considered one of the strongest protective stones. It helps to deflect negative energy, supports a sense of security and contributes to psychological stability.
